Area Events

Our Events Calendar Is Full All Year Long

One of the great things about living in the New River Gorge Region is that there's something to do all year long. Whether you enjoy festivals, attractions, or the change in seasons, the New River Gorge Preserve is living in the heart of it.

New River Nature & Birding Festival

This ever-popular birding festival takes flight every year in the first week of May. Organized by passionate local birders, the festival attracts participants from all over the world to our area. Over 150 different species were sighted during the festival on Preserve trails.

Captain Thurmond's Challenge

The Thurmond Challenge took the idea of a triathlon, and made it harder. The three components to this race are mountain biking, whitewater kayaking, and trail running. Named for the founder of one of the New River's great coal towns, the Captain Thurmond is a great fun for racers and spectators alike.

Heritage Festival and Civil War Living History Festival

During the first weekend in July, people converge on Fayetteville to celebrate our history with food and fun. This is a BIG celebration in the streets. There's a car show, a kiddie tractor pull, a civil war reenactment, a carnival, and of course, lots and lots of fireworks.

Bridge Day Weekend

When we celebrate our bridge, we really do it right. On the third Saturday in October, the Bridge shuts down, and the party begins. Food and festivities span the gorge as more than 150,000 people come to gather on and around the bridge. People from all over the world come to see the B.A.S.E. jumpers skydive off the bridge and into the gorge below.

Fall Foliage

Here's an event that the Preserve enjoys for weeks at a time. Fall colors in the Gorge are as striking as you'll find anywhere. Take any of the long, scenic drives around the area in the fall to get the full effect.

Christmas in Fayetteville

It's a celebration of the season! The second weekend in December hosts a winter carnival with games and attractions for kids. At night, caroling and bonfires warm up the holiday spirit, all in historic downtown Fayettevillle.
