Fayetteville Okays First Phase Of New River Gorge Preserve
FAYETTEVILLE, WV -- Today the five-member planning commission of the Town of Fayetteville unanimously approved the final plat for the first 100 home sites in the New River Gorge Preserve, giving the green light to begin construction activities in the 1,200-acre development.
Developer Gary Driggs, managing partner of New River Ledges Associates, LLC, said he expects to start construction on utilities within the next 60 days. Home sites should be ready for construction by the end of 2006.
The Preserve is a conservation-oriented development stretching approximately six miles on the south side of the New River from the famous steel arch span bridge to a point across from Hawks’ Nest State Park. Driggs said his planned community will preserve more than 85% of the natural West Virginia forest.
“We are very conscious of the beauty of the land,” Driggs said, after the two-and-a-half hour public meeting where development issues were debated. “We are committed to seeing that the forest canopy stays in place throughout the development, that the feeling of the forest remains as it is now.”
“Many of the people who have shown interest in buying land in the development have some kind of tie to West Virginia. They have a strong interest in preserving the beauty of the New River Gorge, “ Driggs said. “The market for the New River Gorge Preserve is professionals and managers in the southern West Virginia region, retiring baby boomers, second home owners, and perhaps most importantly, people in the new work-from-home economy.”
The New River Gorge Preserve will be a gated community with recreation facilities that will include a family activity center, dining facilities, and a nearby 18-hole golf course. Driggs said he expects prices for homes in the Preserve to begin at more than $350,000.
